A beautiful silver half dollar from 1976, in Mint State condition. San Francisco mint (S mintmark).

The obverse side of the coin features a portrait of President John F. Kennedy, 35th president of the United States. Within hours of Kennedy's assassination, the director of the U.S. Mint began evaluating the possibility of featuring Kennedy on the silver dollar, half dollar, or quarter. The choice of coin was offered to Jackie - she suggested the half dollar (which currently featured Benjamin Franklin) as she did not want to displace George Washington from the quarter. Congress passed legislation to feature Kennedy's portrait on the half dollar one month later. While the Kennedy half dollars produced for circulation were struck in copper-nickel from 1971 onwards, these coins were produced in a 40% silver alloy and sold directly to collectors.

Along with the dollar coin, and the quarter, the 1976 version of the Kennedy half dollar features a special design to commemorate the nation's bicentennial. The coin's reverse features Independence Hall, the building where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were debated and adopted by our Founding Fathers.

Each coin is in Mint State condition, with strong luster and no wear (see product pictures for example). The coins measure 30.6mm in diameter, weigh 11.5g, and are .400 fine silver.
